Top 10 Tips for Safe Toy & Gift Giving

Happy Holidays to both new and seasoned Mamas! ‘Tis the season for gift giving and no doubt you’ll be both gifting and receiving a plethora of presents this year. When it comes to the little ones though, it’s a good idea to refresh on the principles of safe toy and gift giving for children. For more information on infant safety check out Mommyato.

Every year, thousands of children make a trip to the ER for toy related injuries [tip #7: riding toys are a top culprit of injuries]. So, a quick review of the basics will help avoid any unplanned trips to the hospital as well as the expense!

  1. Always match the age/skill level of the child with the recommended age/skill level on the toy packaging.
  2. Consider any choking, drowning, or suffocation risks for a child when selecting or receiving a toy.
  3. Inspect the item for sharp edges and small parts that a small child could injure themselves with, swallow, or put in a nostril or ear canal.
  4. Avoid magnets if there are young children in the household. If these are swallowed, they can attract to each other in the intestine and cut off blood flow or puncture the intestine, leading to hospitalization and even surgery.
  5. Make an effort to separate the toys of older and younger children so they are age appropriate.
  6. Supervise battery charging. Some batteries don’t have automatic shut-off features and can get hot to touch, causing thermal burns to a small child.
  7. Insist on helmets with riding toys. Make sure they fit properly (snug and covering the forehead too). Helmets are essential for skates, skateboards, hoverboards, bikes and scooters.
  8. Dispose of holiday wrappings immediately, to avoid young children from choking or suffocating on plastic film, strings, ribbons and deflated balloons.
  9. Visit the American Society for Testing and Material (ASTM) to check out the safety reviews of gifts, like which toys meet non-toxic standards.
  10. If you’re wondering if a toy has been recalled for safety issues, check out the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
